7 Life Lessons Raising Goats Have Taught Me

.Ask any goat owner, and they’ll probably laugh before answering. Goats are escape artists, comedians, problem-solvers, and professional troublemakers—all rolled into one furry package. Over the years, raising my little goat herd has taught me far more than how to repair fences. They’ve taught me patience, persistence, laughter, and a few life lessons I never expected.

Fences Are Only Suggestions

Over the years, my goats have taught me many lessons. First, they have taught me that fences are only suggestions. A goat will constantly test boundaries and look for opportunities to explore. As frustrating as this can be, it reminds me to stay flexible and expect the unexpected.

Their current pen has pipe rails across the top and middle with cattle panels attached. Unfortunately, the openings in the panels were large enough that the goats kept sticking their heads through and getting stuck. Our solution? We wired old wooden pallets along the inside of the fence. It isn’t fancy, but it works. Around our homestead, I care a lot more about fences that keep predators out and goats in than having picture-perfect pens.

Grandma’s Tip: If you think you’ve built a goat-proof fence, give it a week. Your goats will let you know if you missed a spot!

Community Matters

Goats have also taught me the importance of community. They are social animals and thrive when they have companions. Watching them interact reminds me how important relationships are in our own lives. Every herd seems to have its own personalities. There’s the bully, the clown, the peacekeeper, the independent one, the leader, and the followers. Watching them reminds me that people aren’t all that different.

Just a word of wisdom, it is easier to have 5 or more goats than one or two.

Persistence Pays Off

If a goat decides there’s greener grass on the other side of the fence, don’t expect them to give up easily. They’ll test every gate, latch, and weak spot until they either succeed—or convince you to open it yourself. The lesson? Finish what you start, but don’t let a stubborn goat train you. Once they discover persistence works, they’ll remember it forever!

Find Joy Every Day

Most importantly, goats are the court jesters of the animal world. Whether they’re balancing on a stump, chasing each other across the pasture, or demanding treats the second they see you, they have a way of making every day a little brighter.

Final Thoughts

Every homestead teaches valuable lessons, but goats seem determined to teach theirs with a sense of humor. They remind me to laugh when things don’t go as planned, to appreciate good friends, to stay persistent, and to enjoy the simple moments in life. I may be the one feeding them every day, but somehow they’re the ones doing most of the teaching.
